Picking a name for a new dog or cat is way harder than it should be. I once spent a full week calling my rescue “the dog” because nothing felt right. If you’re stuck too, the new 2026 list from Rover is a fun place to start. Charlie and Luna are still the most popular dog names in the U.S., Milo and Luna top the cat list, and the fastest-rising names this year include Rumi for dogs and, yes, Chicken Nugget for cats.

Rover, the pet sitting and dog walking app, has put out a pet names report every year for 14 years now. The 2026 edition came out on October 20, 2026, and it was all over local news by the next morning, with cities from Detroit to Phoenix sharing their own top names.

At the very top, not much changed. According to the report, Charlie is still the No. 1 male dog name in the U.S., and Luna is the No. 1 name for female dogs and female cats. Milo leads for male cats.

Honestly, I’m not shocked. Every dog park I go to has at least one Luna. At my local one there are three, and they all come running when somebody yells the name, which is pretty funny to watch.

If you love a classic, popular names have one upside: they’re easy for everyone to say and easy for your pet to hear. The downside is the dog park chaos I just mentioned.

The more interesting part of the list is the “trending” names. These aren’t the most common names. They’re the ones growing fastest compared to last year, which tells you where people’s heads are at.

For dogs, the top three trending names are Rumi, Lumi and Melo, as reported by FOX 5 New York. Rumi rose 71% and is tied to KPop Demon Hunters, Lumi is linked to a galactic explorer character, and Melo nods to basketball (LaMelo Ball or Carmelo Anthony, your pick).

For cats, Chicken Nugget leads, up 82%, thanks to the viral “Gegagedigedagedago” meme. Miracle and Badger round out the top three.

I’ll admit, Chicken Nugget made me laugh out loud. But think about it, a lot of us already call our pets ridiculous food nicknames. Mine answers to “Meatball” more than his real name.

Rover grouped the rising names into a few themes, and they’re worth knowing because they make it easier to find a name in a style you like.

Cottagecore was the top trend for dogs this year, with several names on both the dog and cat top 10 trending lists. If you’ve never heard the word, cottagecore is that whole cozy aesthetic of gardens, baking bread and cabins in the woods. It makes sense that people want their pet’s name to feel warm and homey.

Vintage revival was the second biggest dog trend. Old-person names on dogs are just so charming, and I think that’s exactly why they keep catching on.

Food names were everywhere too. Beyond Chicken Nugget, 13abc reported that Sundae is climbing for cats and Cannoli for dogs.

Here are dog names that fit this year’s trends. Some come straight from the Rover report, and the rest are ideas in the same style if you want something a little less common.

Cottagecore Dog Names

Alder, Sorrel, Tarragon, Jammy, Clover, Fern, Basil, Juniper, Bramble, Moss, Maple, Willow.

Vintage Dog Names

Walter, Mabel, Frank, Hazel, Otis, Pearl, Gus, Dottie, Murray, Ruth, Harold, June.

Pop Culture and Sports Dog Names

Rumi, Lumi, Melo, plus whatever show your family can’t stop rewatching. Pop culture names are fun, just ask yourself if you’ll still like it in ten years when the show is long forgotten.

Food Dog Names

Cannoli, Biscuit, Waffles, Nacho, Pretzel, Mochi, Peanut, Bagel, Pickles.

Cats seem to get the sillier names, and I’m here for it.

Food Cat Names

Chicken Nugget, Sundae, Mochi, Dumpling, Tater Tot, Biscuit, Noodle, Butterbean.

Cottagecore Cat Names

Badger, Thistle, Sage, Bramble, Wren, Acorn, Primrose, Chestnut.

Nu-Goth Cat Names

Ravenna, Specter, Onyx, Hex, Morticia, Salem, Crow. These are especially popular for black cats, and with Halloween right around the corner, I expect a lot of new Salems this month.

Pop Culture Cat Names

Miracle, plus anything from the shows and memes your household quotes most.

How to Choose a Name Your Pet Will Learn

A trendy name is great, but the best name is one your pet can pick out easily and you don’t mind yelling across a park. A few things I’ve learned the hard way:

  • Keep it to one or two syllables. “Rumi” and “Luna” are quick and easy to hear. If you love a long name like “Chicken Nugget,” just pick a short version you’ll actually use, like “Nugget.”
  • Start with a crisp sound. Names that start with sounds like K, T, B or P tend to cut through background noise better.
  • Avoid names that sound like commands. “Kit” sounds a lot like “sit,” and “Bo” can sound like “no.” That gets confusing fast.
  • Make sure it’s different from people in the house. A dog named Mia in a home with a kid named Leah is going to have a rough time.
  • Say it out loud a few times. Try it in a happy voice, a calm voice and a “come here right now” voice. If it feels weird, keep looking.

If you’re bringing home a puppy, our puppy first night home plan covers the first 24 hours, and for kittens our new kitten checklist has everything you’ll need before day one.

Names to Think Twice About

There’s no wrong name, really, but a few are worth a second thought before you commit.

  • Names that sound like a common command, like Kit (sit), Bo (no) or Shay (stay).
  • Names you’d be embarrassed to call out at the vet’s office. Picture the vet tech saying it in a full waiting room.
  • Names tied to something very current. A meme name can feel dated in a year or two, so pick one you’ll still smile at.
  • Super popular names if you visit busy dog parks a lot. Ask me about the three Lunas.

How to Teach Your Pet Their New Name

Once you’ve picked it, teaching it is the fun part, and it usually takes a week or two of consistent practice.

  1. Say the name once in a happy voice, and the second your pet looks at you, give a small treat or praise.
  2. Do short sessions, about five reps a few times a day, in a quiet room first.
  3. Slowly practice with more distractions, like in the yard or during a walk.
  4. Never use the name to scold. You want it to always mean something good is coming.
  5. Get the whole family using the same name. No nicknames for the first couple of weeks (I failed this one, hence “Meatball”).

If you’re adopting a dog of a specific breed and still deciding, our Cavapoo guide is a good example of how personality can inspire a name. A goofy, cuddly dog sometimes just looks like a Waffles.

Pet Names 2026 FAQ

According to Rover’s 2026 report, Charlie is the most popular male dog name in the United States and Luna is the most popular female dog name. Both have held top spots for several years in a row.

Luna is the most popular female cat name in 2026, and Milo is the most popular male cat name, according to Rover’s annual pet names report released on October 20, 2026.

Rumi is the No. 1 trending dog name, up 71%, linked to KPop Demon Hunters. For cats, Chicken Nugget is the top trending name, up 82%, boosted by a viral meme.

Rover ranks trending names by how much a name’s popularity grew compared with the previous year, not by total numbers. That’s why a name like Chicken Nugget can be “trending” even though far more pets are named Luna.

Can you change a pet’s name after adoption?

Yes. Most dogs and cats can learn a new name in one to two weeks with short, positive practice sessions. Pair the new name with treats and praise, and use it consistently.

Should a pet name be one or two syllables?

One or two syllables is usually easiest for pets to recognize and for you to call out quickly. Longer names work fine too, as long as you use a short version day to day.

My last tip: give the name a test drive for a couple of days before you order the engraved tag. I’ve changed my mind after day two more than once.
