Our editorial policy explains how Paws Refined researches, writes, reviews and updates every dog and cat care article on this site. We want you to know exactly how our content is made, so you can decide how much to trust it.

Our editorial policy in brief
- Every article answers a real question pet owners ask
- Health and safety claims are checked against trusted veterinary sources
- We write in plain, human language and avoid hype
- We clearly say when a situation needs a veterinarian
- We update articles when guidance changes and correct errors quickly
How we choose topics
We look at the questions dog and cat owners search for most, the problems readers send us, and the seasonal issues that come up every year, like holiday food dangers or summer heat. If a topic matters to real owners, it is on our list.
Research and sources
We rely on primary and expert sources wherever possible, including the Merck Veterinary Manual, the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and university veterinary schools. We do not treat forums, social media posts or product marketing as evidence.
Writing standards
- Clear answers first. We give you the short answer near the top, then the detail.
- Practical steps. Wherever possible, we tell you what to do next.
- Honest limits. If science is unclear, we say so.
- Safety flags. Warning signs and emergencies are always highlighted.
Reviews, updates and corrections
Articles are reviewed regularly and whenever new guidance is published. If you spot an error, please tell us through our contact page. We check every correction request and update the article if needed.
Independence and advertising
Our editorial decisions are never influenced by brands or advertisers. If we ever include affiliate links or sponsored content, it will be clearly labeled. You can read more about how we handle information in our privacy policy.
Not a substitute for your vet
Our guides are for general education. They cannot replace an examination by a veterinarian who knows your pet. Please read our veterinary disclaimer and, if you need a new clinic, our guide on how to choose a veterinarian.
